LPU Protest Turns Violent After Viral Rape-Suicide Claims
Tension broke out at Lovely Professional University after social media claims about a female student being raped and later dying by suicide spread on campus.
A large number of students gathered near the girls’ hostel and later blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway. The protest turned violent, with university property damaged and some objects set on fire. Police reached the campus and brought the situation under control.
Police said they had not received a complaint or found evidence confirming the rape allegation when the statements were made. Officials said the claims spreading on social media were unverified and that the matter was being looked into.
LPU administration has also rejected the allegations as false and baseless and urged students not to believe unverified information circulating online.
The immediate situation is under control, but authorities are still working to establish what happened and what led to the protests.
