What some consider brain-rot and other self-expression, pronouns are a part of this world nonetheless. The debates on its validity and utility have become a self-feeding mechanism and thus it is not new for anyone to make a sensational comment on the topic. But, it can be quite the nuisance for someone who’s presence and position may cause an effect if a statement like this is made. Such has been the case of Bhavish Aggarwal, the Co-Founder & CEO of OLA. He took the matter to twitter when the LinkedIn A.I. tool addressed Aggarwal with the pronouns They/Them.

Bhavish wrote “Hoping that this “pronoun illness” doesn’t reach India.” Pointing out how this is now being taught in schools and even CVs are now coming in with these pronouns. As expected, this sparked a debate. People came swarming in both in favour and opposition of the matter. Some mentioned how this is a propaganda of the west. Accusing MNCs for backing these. On the other end there are people who mentioned how inclusivity and respecting someone’s choices is basic decency, questioning Aggarwal if he’d reject a CV for this.

While one may call it a progressive idea, one has to understand the pronouns are a part of speech and language. And essentially, language is meant for communication within the community rather than convenience of individuals. What one can safely assume is that the pronoun debate is far from being concluded.
