However, one of his 2022 releases, “Shamshera,” encountered difficulties as it failed to impress at the box office and faced plagiarism allegations.
The movie, which depicted the story of a highly oppressed tribe seeking freedom from the British, was accused of being a rip-off of a script titled “Kabu Na Chhadein Khet” by Bikramjeet Singh Bhullar. He filed a case against the movie and Yash Raj Films. In response, they argued that there couldn’t be a copyright issue since “Shamshera” was a fictional period drama, while “KNCK” focused on Afghan attempts to capture India.

The court sided with Yash Raj Films, dismissing the copyright allegations. The judges clarified that there is no copyright protection for themes, plots, and ideas, emphasizing the fundamental differences between the two stories. Despite a promising premise, “Shamshera” faced box office failure, with speculations that it was overshadowed by the hype surrounding another Kapoor film, “Brahmastra.”
