Swiggy and Zomato are the largest online food delivery applications in India right now. Right from food to groceries, almost everything is available on these platforms and customers can get items within a few minutes.
Meanwhile, plans are being made to deliver alcohol as well through these delivery applications. Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Big Basket and other major platforms are planning to start delivering moderate-alcohol content liquor in states like Kerala, Karnataka, New Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Goa as a part of the pilot project.
Currently, home delivery of alcohol is allowed in only two states, West Bengal and Odisha. The platforms are now exploring the pros and cons of delivering liquor online.
They plan to cater to the growing population in larger cities where many people consume low/moderate alcohol-content spirits like beer, wine and liqueurs.
It was opined that older people and women, who have a habit of consuming these low/moderate content alcohol don’t prefer buying them in roadside liquor shops and delivering online would help them.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government allowed temporary online delivery of alcohol in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh and Assam.
Retail companies stated that the sales increased by 20-30% due to online delivery in the states of Odisha and West Bengal.
In a survey conducted by the International Spirits and Wines Association of India in the past, 100% of Hyderabadis requested to start online delivery of alcohol in the city.
