As a crowd of 80,000 Indians flock the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata on Thursday, all eyes will be on Sunil Chhetri as he walks out in Indian blues for one last time. Sunil Chhetri selflessly devoted not just years but decades to Indian football and has played a huge role in reviving the popularity of the game in India.

It all started in Kolkata in 2002 when he joined Mohun Bagan and began his professional journey. To list down his achievements in the form of statistics would be an insult to the impact this man has had on football.

If there’s a person who has carried the weight of promoting football in India single-handedly, it is Sunil Chhetri. It is because of him that empty stadiums turned housefull. He is the reason why a strong crowd stood behind the Indian team regardless of win or loss.
