India opener Abhishek Sharma has been hospitalised ahead of the T20 World Cup match against Namibia on February 12 in New Delhi. The left hander is suffering from a stomach infection. His availability for the crucial game is now doubtful.
As per reports, Abhishek Sharma has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi for the last two days. Doctors are conducting tests to assess his condition. There is no clarity yet on when he will be discharged.
A BCCI source said the team is closely monitoring his health. The infection has reportedly weakened him. He also missed India’s first training session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Abhishek was already unwell before India’s opening match against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium. His condition worsened during the game. He was dismissed for a duck and did not field in the second innings.
Sanju Samson replaced him as substitute fielder. Abhishek also skipped the post match handshakes. Reports stated that he had a high fever and was given drips for quick relief.
What was initially described as a stomach upset has now developed into a proper infection. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said the team is waiting for clarity on his fitness. The final playing XI will depend on his recovery.
“Abhi still has a few issues. We’re hopeful, but his fitness will decide our combinations,” he said.
Abhishek travelled with the squad to Delhi. He was seen at head coach Gautam Gambhir’s residence on February 8 during a team dinner. However, his health reportedly deteriorated after that.
With Abhishek missing training, Sanju Samson was the first batter to train in the nets. He looked slightly uncomfortable against Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya. He also received treatment on his left arm.
Samson has been under pressure after slipping behind Ishan Kishan in the pecking order. India is expected to get a clearer update after the final training session in Delhi on Wednesday. For now, Abhishek Sharma missing the Namibia clash appears almost certain.
