Not India’s Era: Gambhir Finally Accepts ODI Failure?

Gautam Gambhir press conference reaction

India head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav showed a rare moment of accountability after India defeated New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup.

During the post match press conference, a reporter asked Gautam Gambhir whether India’s recent success meant the beginning of a golden era in white ball cricket.

The question referred to India winning two T20 World Cups and the Champions Trophy 2025 in a short span of time.

Responding to the question, Gautam Gambhir dismissed the idea of calling it an era. He pointed out that India’s recent performances in ODI cricket have not been consistent.

He said the team had lost two of the last three ODI series, which shows there is still work to be done.

According to Gautam Gambhir, the concept of an era in cricket is not important. Instead, the focus should remain on performing well in every match.

“Look I will not talk about any era in white ball cricket. If it was our era, we would not have lost two of the last three ODI series,” he said during the interaction.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav, who was seated next to him, listened quietly and nodded in agreement with the coach’s remarks.

Many fans were surprised by Gautam Gambhir’s response. In recent press conferences after defeats, he had faced criticism for appearing defensive and shifting blame.

This time, however, his comments were viewed as a more balanced and honest assessment of the team’s performance.

Supporters believe acknowledging the team’s weaknesses is an important step toward improvement, especially in the ODI format.

If India manages to address its issues in 50 over cricket, the team could enter the 2027 ODI World Cup with strong confidence.

Winning that tournament would truly mark a dominant phase for the Indian Cricket Team in white ball cricket.
