Bowling Like His Prime Days: Still Out! Selection Bias

Mohammed Shami India Comeback Bengal Coach

Mohammed Shami is still hoping for another chance to play for Team India, and his Bengal coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla believes the experienced pacer has not lost his skills.

He is bowling like a youngster and deserves to finish his career in an India jersey.

Shami’s recent domestic performances have strengthened his case. He picked up 37 wickets in seven Ranji Trophy matches during the 2025-26 season.

Followed by 15 wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and 16 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He also took seven wickets for East Zone in the 2026 Duleep Trophy campaign.

The numbers tell a different story from his recent IPL returns, where he managed just 18 wickets across 22 matches in the last two season.

His domestic form suggests he can still take wickets consistently, but earning another India call up will depend on whether the selectors believe he can meet the demands of international cricket.

Shukla has known Shami since his early days in Bengal cricket and believes the fast bowler’s commitment has not changed.

He told media that Shami still wants to play for India and continues to motivate teammates in the dressing room.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup getting closer, the question is whether his domestic performances will be enough to bring him back into the national setup.

For now, Laxmi Ratan Shukla has made his position clear he believes Shami deserves another opportunity.
