MS Dhoni’s future with Chennai Super Kings has again become a talking point, but CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has now denied reports that the former captain wanted an ownership stake in the franchise.
Reports had claimed that Dhoni was seeking a major share in CSK and that disagreements over the proposal had affected his relationship with the franchise. One report even claimed that Dhoni wanted a 25 percent stake, while CSK had offered 5.5 percent.
Kasi Viswanathan has rejected the claims. Speaking to PTI, the CSK CEO called the reports completely baseless.
So, is there really any problem between Dhoni and CSK? According to Viswanathan, there is no such issue. He also made it clear that Dhoni has not yet confirmed whether he will continue playing in the IPL.
Dhoni hasn’t yet said he won’t play. So let’s wait, Viswanathan said. Dhoni did not play a single game in IPL 2026 after suffering a calf injury before the season. It was the first time he missed an entire IPL season since the tournament began.
CSK also had a disappointing 2026 campaign and failed to reach the playoffs. That naturally led to questions about what comes next for Dhoni and the franchise.
Will he return as a player in IPL 2027? Or is his role with CSK about to change? Viswanathan had previously said that the franchise would like Dhoni to remain involved with CSK in some capacity, whether as a player, coach or mentor.
We would always like to have him as a permanent fixture at CSK in whatever capacity, he had said. But the final decision remains with Dhoni.
The uncertainty comes at an important time for CSK. Long time head coach Stephen Fleming has left the franchise, and Dhoni’s decision could have an impact on the team’s next step.
Will Dhoni return to the dressing room as a player, take up a coaching role or become a mentor?
For now, there is no official answer. What is clear is that the ownership story has been denied by CSK’s CEO. The bigger question remains Dhoni’s future.
Dhoni has not announced his IPL 2027 plans yet, and CSK are waiting for the former captain to make the call.
