Jasprit Bumrah might not be part of the Asia Cup 2025 squad. Reports indicate that the selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar and team mentor Gautam Gambhir, are considering resting him to manage his workload and keep him fit for upcoming Tests.
The BCCI confirmed on Friday that Bumrah has been released from the squad for the fifth Test against England. This decision aligns with the pre-series plan. Ajit Agarkar had stated earlier that Bumrah would play only three Tests to ensure he stays fresh.
Bumrah delivered strong performances, taking 14 wickets in three matches, including two five-wicket hauls. However, during the final game in Manchester, he conceded over 100 runs in an innings for the first time in his career, raising concerns about fatigue.
India’s next assignment is the Asia Cup, ending on September 29. But the Test series against West Indies begins in Ahmedabad on October 2. If India reaches the Asia Cup final, Bumrah would have little time to rest before the Tests.
A BCCI source quoted by PTI mentioned Bumrah’s preference for red-ball cricket and the importance of World Test Championship points. The source suggested he may skip the Asia Cup and instead play the New Zealand T20 series in January as a lead-up to the T20 World Cup.
This strategy appears logical. Although West Indies may not pose a significant threat, India would want their premier fast bowler in top shape for the two big Test matches against South Africa in November.
If Bumrah features in the Asia Cup, he may miss the West Indies series. Skipping the Asia Cup, on the other hand, keeps him fresh for the longer format where his impact is more significant.
The decision lies with Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir: preserve Bumrah for Tests or play him in the Asia Cup and risk burnout before key red-ball matches.
Another point to consider is Bumrah’s limited ODI appearances leading up to the T20 World Cup at home next year. The focus is now on managing him wisely for high-stakes events rather than deploying him in every series.
Whether or not Bumrah plays the Asia Cup, his fitness and performance in upcoming Tests and the T20 World Cup will be crucial to India’s success.
