Despite these symptoms, he chose to continue playing. He delivered several match winning performances and played a key role in India’s World Cup success.
After the tournament, his health condition worsened. Medical tests later revealed a rare form of cancer, with a tumour located in his chest between the heart and lung.
This diagnosis came as a shock when his career seemed stable. In a conversation with Michael Vaughan, Yuvraj said athletes rarely think about illness during their playing years.
He admitted that he ignored the warning signs because representing India was his top priority. His focus remained on contributing to the team.
The situation became critical when doctors informed him about the seriousness of the tumour. They warned that without chemotherapy, his survival could be limited to a few months.
This forced Yuvraj Singh to accept the reality and begin treatment. He travelled to the United States for chemotherapy during 2011 and 2012.
The treatment phase was physically and mentally challenging. At one point, he even doubted whether he would return to cricket again.
It took him nearly a year to recover and regain strength. Despite the uncertainty, he remained determined to make a comeback.
