Back-to-Back Blows for AM Rathnam: One More Flop?

Vijay Kushi re-release box office

Thalapathy Vijay has a massive fan following. Every release or re-release of his films turns into a grand celebration. Among re-releases, Ghilli still tops the list, earning over Rs. 3 crores on day one last year. Even Sachein, a comparatively average film, surprised trade circles with Rs. 1.76 crores on its re-release. Naturally, expectations were high for Kushi, another Vijay blockbuster, with producer AM Rathnam hoping the new print would create waves.

The response for Kushi has been underwhelming. Trade reports suggest it grossed around Rs. 70 lakhs on day one. While higher than films like Baba, Dheena, and Billa, it falls far behind Ghilli and Sachein. Fans hoping for record-breaking numbers were slightly disappointed. Kushi was also made in Telugu with Pawan Kalyan in the lead.

AM Rathnam, who faced a major loss with Pawan Kalyan’s Hari Hara Veera Mallu, had hoped Kushi would offer some relief. Unfortunately, that did not happen. The underwhelming collections add pressure on the producer’s upcoming projects and raise questions about recovery.

Trade analysts expected massive celebrations for Kushi, especially with Vijay’s growing political presence. His next film, Jana Nayakudu, scheduled for release on January 9, is under close watch. Reports suggest the film touches on several sensitive issues, fueling speculation about potential controversies when it releases.
