For the last few months, Tamil Nadu theatre owners and distributors have been constantly demanding that Tamil film producers sign OTT deals with an 8-week OTT window, claiming that the 4-week OTT window is heavily affecting the theatrical business.
Even though multiple discussions have been held in the Producers Council to regulate these demands of the theatre owners, there hasn’t been any progress.
Consequently, the theatre owners have started pressuring the producers to make a proper decision on their demands and announced that no films without an 8-week OTT window will be screened.
After the theatre owners announced this, the Producers Council made the decision that no films will be released in theatres starting from September 1 and production as well as post-production will be put on hold until this issue is sorted.
The Tamil film producers have officially announced this through a press note and this news has now gone viral on social media, triggering heated discussions.
In response to this news, many social media users suggest that nowadays most medium-budget films, or even biggies, do not have a solid theatrical run for more than 3 weeks, claiming that the 4-week OTT window works well for both the producers and theatre owners in terms of business.
Also, they feel that instead of focusing on delivering good movies and providing a good movie-watching experience, these Tamil film producers and theatre owners are fighting over an unnecessary problem and turning it into a huge issue.
However, it remains to be seen whether this strike will emerge as a huge issue and no films will be released in theatres from September 1 in Kollywood or whether this issue will be resolved smoothly and films will have a smooth release in the following days.
