Sankranthi Film, But Peak Negativity On Ground?

Thalapathy Vijay’s Jananayagan movie update

It has long been a tradition in South Indian cinema for superstars to release their big films during the Sankranti festival season. Among them, Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay is known for strategically using this festive period to bring his films to theatres.

Continuing the trend, Vijay has lined up his upcoming film Jananayagan for release during the Sankranti festival (known as Pongal in Tamil Nadu). The festive window is usually considered one of the most lucrative box office seasons for major South Indian releases.

However, the current on-ground situation seems to be unfavourable for the film. There has been very little promotional activity so far, and Vijay himself is facing public backlash following the Karur stampede tragedy, which claimed 41 lives.

Given the sensitivity surrounding the incident, the makers of Jananayagan are reportedly holding back on any major promotions to avoid further controversy. This delay has resulted in a serious momentum gap ahead of the crucial festival season.

Several factors appear to be working against Jananayagan, and most are tied to the continuing public dismay toward Vijay after the stampede incident. Industry watchers say it remains to be seen how the film can recover, with just two months left before its release.

For the project to regain ground, the negative sentiment around Vijay must subside, followed by a carefully timed promotional push for the film. However, managing both may prove challenging.

As of now, Jananayagan could turn out to be one of Vijay’s most unusual and challenging releases, shaped as much by external controversies as by the festival box office race itself.
