Tech companies all over the world are pushing their limits to come up with even smarter AI systems but the Man behind development of many such technologies has decided to leave the scene, and he has a message. Geoffrey Hinton, considered as the ‘Godfather of A.I.’ has left Google and warned everyone about the dangerous repercussions of advancements made in this field.
Hinton said that he has quit his job at Google so that he could openly talk about the dangers the technology possesses. He also said that he regrets his life’s work. In an interview he said,”I console myself with the normal excuse: If I hadn’t done it, somebody else would have.”
Hinton has invested his career in development of neural networks that learn by analyzing data it has access to. This technology later led to creation of chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard. He used to believe that the technology is still 30-50 years away from getting close to human intelligence but he no longer thinks that.
The threat of AI is not only limited to spread of false information but also a threat to jobs. He believes that sooner it can act as a threat to humanity. Hinton blames the rising competition between companies like Google and Microsoft for acting as a catalyst in the process. He believes that it’ll not stop without any global regulations but that too might not be effective as no one can find out what these companies are working on.
