OpenAI is in trouble again and this time it’s writers and authors who have sued the generative AI company for infringement of copyrighted work. The famous writer, George R.R. Martin alongwith a group of other writers have filed a lawsuit against the company. George R.R. Martin is the author of the famous book series, “A Song Of Ice And Fire”.
The lawsuit mentions that the AI company generates results that use copyrighted work. In an instance, ChatGPT generated a prequel to the show, Game Of Thrones and titled it ‘A Dawn Of Direwolves’. However this work used characters from the existing book ‘A Song Of Ice And Fire’. This has been deemed as ‘infringing’ and ‘unauthorized’ by the lawsuit.
The CEO of Authors guild said that theft like this needs to be prevented otherwise it will destroy ‘incredible literary culture’. The authors are demanding to have full control over how their work is used and accessed by generative AI companies. The authors are not paid anything when their work is used by these companies to generate desired results no matter how many times it accesses copyrighted work. The lawsuit would be a key to formulating new regulations around the issue.
