India Rolls Out E-Passport

India e-passport upgrade 2025

India has begun issuing e-passports nationwide, bringing enhanced security and convenience to international travel. Applicants can log on to the official website, book an appointment, and complete verification at Passport Seva Kendras.

An e-passport is not a replacement but an upgrade to the traditional passport. It features an embedded chip containing biometric details, making travel hassle-free while improving security and reducing risks of forgery.

The nationwide rollout began in 2025. Existing passports remain valid until their expiry date, but anyone applying for a new passport or renewal will receive an e-passport by default.

Issued under Passport Seva Programme 2.0, these passports meet ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) standards, ensuring global recognition and faster border control checks with reduced wait times.

Key features include PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) technology and digital signatures to secure personal details. The use of durable polycarbonate sheets replaces traditional paper, enhancing strength and longevity.

Travellers with upcoming trips or business visits can visit their nearest Passport Seva Kendra or Regional Passport Office to get their upgraded e-passport.
