What’s Up With Google’s New Wallet App?

Google New Wallet App

Google is trying its hands at another payments app, after the success of Google Pay. The app is named as Google Wallet. But there is a fundamental difference in the functioning of the two.

Google Pay works on the UPI which is directly linked to the user’s bank account. Google Wallet on the other hand acts as an inventory where users could save their credit and debit cards and works only on the devices having NFC (near-field communication).

Google wallet will only work to carry out contact less payments using cards saved in the app.

As of now, Google has not launched its latest payments app in the country but some users have reported to have gotten the update to download the app. In the event, when the app will become official in India, both GPay and Google Wallet will work catering to different users having different needs.

The real question one could ask is the need for such an app in India where UPI is so dominant and even GPay allows users to add cards. The success of this new app which could be used by a limited number of users given the prerequisite of NFC, is uncertain.
