American Airlines is facing criticism after a passenger claimed the carrier failed to deliver a promised $1,200 travel credit. The traveller says they volunteered to be rebooked from Aspen, only to be left out of pocket and frustrated.

Delay and Volunteer Request

The incident began a month ago when the passenger boarded a flight from Aspen that was delayed on the tarmac for two hours due to strong winds. After passengers were asked to deplane, American Airlines reportedly sought 20 volunteers willing to switch to later flights in exchange for a $1,200 travel credit.

Passenger Accepts but Faces Costs

The traveller accepted the offer, received thanks from staff, and was rebooked on a flight departing from Grand Junction the next morning. With no suitable flights available from Aspen for several days, they booked a hotel and took a taxi, spending nearly $800.

Credit Never Posted

Despite staff assurances that the credit would appear automatically, the passenger says nothing was ever posted. After weeks of repeated calls, American Airlines allegedly claimed that no record of the credit exists and referred the traveller back to Aspen airport.

Out of Pocket and Seeking Help

The passenger says they are now out nearly $2,000, including the additional expenses. They were told to return to Aspen in person to resolve the matter, a solution they describe as unreasonable and unfair.
