In a significant development, India announced the resumption of visa services for Canadian nationals after a month-long suspension. The move comes after a thorough review of the security situation, taking into account recent measures implemented by Canada. The Indian High Commission in Canada posted an official statement, detailing the categories for which visa services will be reinstated, effective immediately.
The categories for which visa services have resumed include entry visas, business visas, medical visas, and conference visas. However, the statement emphasized that emergency situations will continue to be promptly addressed by the High Commission and Consulates General, just as it has been done during the temporary suspension period.
The diplomatic relations between India and Canada had strained in recent months, with tensions escalating following Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau’s allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. This led to a series of tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats, exacerbating the already delicate situation.
India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, shed light on the reason behind the visa suspension, stating that it was imperative due to the safety concerns of Indian diplomats in Canada. “Some weeks ago, we stopped issuing visas in Canada because it was no longer safe for our diplomats to go to work to issue visas. So their safety and security were the primary reasons we had to temporarily stop the issuance of visas,” he explained.
However, the decision to resume visa services indicates a potential easing of tensions between the two nations. The careful review of the security situation and the subsequent resumption of visa services suggest a willingness on both sides to de-escalate the conflict and work towards normalizing diplomatic relations.
India’s willingness to reopen its doors to Canadian nationals signifies a diplomatic gesture, indicating a positive step forward. Observers are optimistic that this move could pave the way for constructive dialogue and cooperation between India and Canada in the near future. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, hopeful for a peaceful resolution between these two nations.
