The steep rise in the number of Indian students getting killed in the United States has forced the Indian diaspora to come out and seek answers concerning the safety of the students. The Indian American community it’s allegedly facing hate crime as most of these incidents took place around East and Midwest universities.
Foundation For India And Indian Diaspora Studies(FIIDS), a diaspora body of Indian Americans has urged the US government to address the sharp increase in these allegedly targeted killings. The nature and cause of death in these cases ranges from shooting, mental health issues, accidents.
There have been a total of 11 deaths of Indian students so far in 2024. This has made the whole community concerned regarding the safety of their wards. The diaspora demands implementing stricter rules to deal with ragging.
The US government hasn’t done much to address the issue. It has even tried to ward off the responsibility on students themselves by asking them to stay safe. Indians constitute one of the biggest groups in American universities hence it is important for them to address the issue.
