One careless mistake can cost a heavy price for immigrants in the US, no matter if they have their Green Card approved.
A woman, with an approved PERM but still waiting for the physical card, left the US for a short trip. But in her rush, she forgot her original travel permit.
Her husband sent her a scanned copy, hoping that sense would prevail, and it would be enough to get her back in. But it wasn’t.
Instead, the woman was met with a nightmare at immigration in Puerto Rico.
She was pulled aside and deported, without explanation or answers from the authorities. If that wasn’t enough, she’s now accused of fraud for re-entering with a photocopy of a valid document.
The couple’s immigration lawyer says they’ll now have to start the PERM process all over again. That means months, or maybe years, of lost time, money, and hope.
If you’re an immigrant, even with approvals in hand, you’re still walking on a tightrope. One misstep, and everything can collapse.
It’s stories like these that show just how unforgiving and sometimes absurd the American immigration system can be. There is no grace for honest mistakes.
