A young tech worker who followed the expected path has found himself stuck due to the H-1B lottery system. With this year’s results out, his final attempt to secure a US work visa has come to an end.
The techie shared his experience online. He studied in the US and secured a role at a FAANG-level company. While the job appeared promising, he soon realised that it offered limited learning and career growth.
He stated that his current role on a STEM OPT work permit has not added much value over the past two years. Despite the strong brand name, the work has left him feeling stagnant and uncertain about his future.
He attempted to switch jobs last year, but companies hesitated due to his EAD on an F-1 visa nearing expiry. This limitation made it difficult to secure opportunities, even with relevant qualifications and experience.
He also reached the final stage of interviews with another major tech firm. However, the opportunity did not materialise. With the H-1B option no longer available, he now faces two challenging paths.
One option is to return to academics. He has applied for a Master’s in Computer Science but received admission to a limited programme. This has made him question whether the investment will be worthwhile.
The second option is an internal transfer to Germany within his company. However, the role would remain the same. Even if he returns to the US later on an L1 visa, switching employers could become difficult.
The issue extends beyond immigration challenges. The tech worker highlighted concerns about career stagnation and lack of skill growth. His original goal was to gain experience and save money before returning home.
Now, he finds himself caught between visa restrictions and a slowing job market. Both available options feel restrictive, leaving him uncertain about the next step in his professional journey.
