The US Airport authorities have caught an Indian-origin man trying to smuggle 32 Kg of methamphetamine in drug-soaked clothes. He is now facing serious charges which can lead to a life sentence.
Raj Matharu was about to board a flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Sydney, Australia earlier this month. During a routine luggage scan, the officers noticed something unusual in his pink and grey suitcases and decided to open them.
The 31-year-old Indian-American thought he could fool the security scan by dousing over a dozen clothes with drugs. On inspection the authorities found his garments covered with a white substance, which lab tests confirmed as meth.
Matharu has been charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and is currently out on a $10,000 bond. If convicted, he faces a minimum of 10 years in prison and could be sentenced to life.
US attorney Martin Estrada was appalled by the new creative way that drug smugglers are using for their operations. However, this incident is proof that airport security is also well-equipped and trained to crack down on such criminals.
