Indian shoppers at Costco have already become a target of unnecessary online hate. Videos showing large numbers of Indians at Costco have been going viral, with some people using them to push the usual “Indians are everywhere” narrative. The H-1B debate gets dragged into it as well.
Now, another Indian-made Costco reel is getting attention, but for a different reason.
The video has upset many viewers who feel that the behaviour shown in it was simply unnecessary and showed “zero civic sense.” The problem is not that an Indian girl went shopping at Costco or made a reel. People can obviously do that. It is about knowing where to draw the line when filming and behaving in a public place.
Unfortunately, social media does not stop at one person. A video made for views can quickly become content for people who are already waiting to attack the Indian community.
That is what makes this frustrating for many Indians living in the US. They should not have to answer for someone else’s social media behaviour, especially when H-1B visa holders and the wider Indian community are already facing plenty of criticism.
One person does not represent an entire community. But when the spotlight is already on you, a little common sense before hitting “post” really matters.
