Passport Renewal Disaster: NRI Stuck in VFS Glitch

Indian passport renewal struggle in US

Indian passport renewal in the US was never easy, but a recent experience shows how chaotic the system has become. Even a Tatkal application failed to move forward because of a glitch that left the applicant stranded without options.

How a simple upload broke the process

A Reddit user shared that Visa Facilitation Services in New York accepted their photo and signature uploads online, yet the PDF generated by the system showed blank fields. They only realised the error when VFS requested corrections, and by then, fixing it became difficult.

Locked out after multiple failed attempts

Their photo eventually appeared after repeated tries, but the signature stayed missing. They were unaware of the 12 attempt limit for uploading signatures. Once they crossed it, the portal locked them out completely, while the Tatkal clock kept running.

Tatkal promise fails to deliver

Despite verbal reassurance from VFS staff, the applicant waited 15 days with no movement. Helpline support later claimed the file was forwarded to the Indian Embassy. After a long wait there, officials gave the same response the portal flagged earlier. The missing signature continued to halt everything.

A loop without resolution

The applicant’s documents remain stuck between VFS and the Embassy. The Tatkal fee offered no benefit, and the fast track processing never activated. They now hold another VFS appointment with no guarantee that this attempt will work.

What this means for Indian applicants in the US

The situation reflects a broader fear among NRIs. One small technical glitch, even when not their fault, can turn into a lengthy crisis. In a system already stretched, travellers feel that a single error can derail their plans entirely.
