A PhD dream is now at risk due to indefinite delays in the US immigration system. An international student shared their struggle on social media after applying for an F-1 visa to pursue a PhD in America. Their interview was held at the US Embassy in Seoul on June 20, after which they were asked to submit a new DS-160 form on July 23.
Visa Status Stuck in Administrative Processing
Since submitting the updated form, the student’s visa status has remained at “Application Received.” Officials informed them that the case is stuck in administrative processing, which has now lasted over two months, creating a lot of anxiety.
Flight and Admission at Risk
Their flight is booked for August 19, while classes begin on August 22. The university warned that missing this semester will result in cancellation of their admission, adding immense pressure on the student.
Reasons Behind Delays
Visa processing has slowed due to heightened security checks, deeper background reviews, and scrutiny of social media accounts. Student visas are being scrutinised more carefully than before, leading to unexpected delays.
No Accountability Amid Long Waits
While all friends received their visas on time, this student remains stuck in limbo. Administrative processing can take weeks or months in the current political environment, jeopardising years of preparation with little accountability from the authorities.
