Silent Updates Derail Green Card: OPT Job Ending?

USCIS green card applicant checking updates

Silent case updates from United States Citizenship and Immigration Services are reportedly increasing anxiety among green card applicants, especially Indian workers waiting for employment-based approvals. Many applicants are now closely tracking every minor case update while worrying about expiring work permits and visa deadlines.

A social media user recently shared concerns about receiving multiple “silent updates” on an employment-based green card application without any clear progress on work authorization. According to the post, the applicant’s EB-2 I-140 priority date is September 4, 2025, while the I-485 adjustment of status application was filed on April 1.

The user stated that biometrics for the application were already completed successfully. They also claimed that both the I-765 work permit application and the I-485 application received timestamp-only updates on May 11 without any visible status changes.

According to the applicant, a USCIS chatbot later confirmed that the case was still being processed at the National Benefits Center. However, another silent update reportedly appeared on May 23, this time only for the I-485 application, creating further uncertainty about the case progress.

The worker expressed concern because both the STEM OPT work authorization and visa validity are expected to expire during the first week of July. The applicant claimed there has been no major movement on the I-765 work permit application despite repeated background updates on the green card case.

The situation reflects growing stress among several foreign workers waiting for immigration approvals in the United States. Many applicants now carefully monitor every USCIS timestamp update, hoping it could indicate faster movement on pending cases before their legal work status expires.
