OTT viewers in India set a new record by picking the right film and making it #1 most-watched on Netflix.
‘Laapataa Ladies’ went on to beat a heavyweight action oriented film like ‘Animal’ last week, but it didn’t stop there. According to this week’s latest official stats from Netflix, it has surpassed ‘Fighter’ (14 million views) and ‘Shitaan’ (14.8 million views), topping Netflix’s most-viewed list.
‘Laapataa Ladies’ has crossed 15 million views on Netflix, setting a solid record. Most importantly, the OTT audience sent a message to filmmakers about the kinds of films they enjoy at home.
‘Laapataa Ladies’ is a clean family film with emotions, once again proving the purpose of OTT. Home viewers don’t need masala or action all the time; a simple, relatable film like ‘Laapataa Ladies’ can excite them and generate massive views for the platform.
By favoring star-driven, known hero movies, all the time OTT platforms in India risk defeating the whole purpose of streaming: to bring fresh talent and family-friendly content.
Hopefully, the OTT bosses now realize what home-viewing audiences need to hit big for them.
