Kaala

We already had an idea of how the West perceives Indian cinema. However, they are so ignorant about its quality that they included a flop Indian movie in a list of the 25 best movies from 21st century around the world. Yes, you heard it right. A forgettable Rajnikanth movie “Kaala”, which was considered average both in theaters and critically, was given the spot of the best movie of 2018. Interestingly it is also the only Indian movie to have made it to the top 25 list. Wait! Does that mean “Kaala” was actually a great movie and we have failed as an audience. Sounds funny, Right?

Surprisingly the list was made by British Film Institute who labelled it the best movie of 2018 which implies that it is better thann other Indian movies like “Andhadhun”, “October”, and “Tumbbad”, which also released in the same year. “Kaala”, starring Rajnikanth and Nana Patekar in the lead roles, was a take on India’s casteism and power politics. The movie had an interesting face-off between the leads but was dragged out too much, leading to its criticism and subsequent failure.

Now, if we were to dissect their decision to include “Kaala” in the list, there could be a few explanations. First of all, there may be a lack of knowledge among the jury members about Indian cinema. They might have included an Indian movie just for the sake of inclusivity, without truly understanding its merits. However, this point can be countered by the global acclaim for *RRR*, despite its over-the-top action and loud treatment.

It’s evident that they have immaturely selected a random Indian movie for the sake of inclusivity. They could have done better research and come up with many better options than “Kaala”. Let us know your thoughts.
