Jetlee OTT Verdict: Top Trending Doesn’t Mean Approval?

Jetlee trending on Jio Hotstar

Satya’s Jetlee, directed by Ritesh Rana and presented by Mythri Movie Makers, was expected to have a second life on OTT after struggling badly during its theatrical run. The comedy entertainer is now streaming on Jio Hotstar, but as expected, the response on OTT appears very similar to what the film received in theatres.

Many viewers on social media are thrashing the film for depending too heavily on meme culture without building a strong story around it. Several users feel the comedy relies more on random pop-culture references and internet humor rather than a properly developed narrative. Some viewers who skipped the film in theatres out of curiosity are now sharing similar complaints after watching it on Jio Hotstar.

What makes the situation interesting, however, is that despite the backlash, Jetlee has climbed to the number one trending position on Hotstar.

However, Jetlee’s trending position on OTT is not as surprising as it may seem. Negative publicity can often increase curiosity, encouraging people who skipped the film in theatres to watch it simply to understand the backlash. Social media conversations can also create “hate watching,” where viewers click on content mainly to judge it for themselves.

Another factor could be platform visibility. OTTs often prominently promote newly released titles through banners, recommendations, and homepage placement, naturally increasing clicks and watch time. Importantly, trending status on OTT platforms does not automatically indicate that the audience has loved the content.

Despite the controversy about views on Jio Hotstar, it can be said that Jetlee has been rejected by OTT audiences as well, just like theatrical audiences.

Jetlee is a completely wild and experimental attempt from Ritesh Rana. He is known for original ideas and unusual concepts. But according to many viewers, Jetlee once again highlights the same complaint surrounding his work: Ritesh Rana needs better scripts. Ideas alone are not enough.
