Saif Ali Khan’s upcoming film Kartavya is set to premiere on Netflix in the coming days. Director Pulkit recently shared details about the film and explained why he currently prefers OTT releases instead of theatrical releases for certain projects.
In an interview with Variety India, Pulkit revealed that he always wanted Saif Ali Khan to play the lead role in Kartavya. He praised Saif’s performance in Omkara and said that Vishal Bhardwaj explored a side of the actor that many filmmakers have not fully utilised.
Pulkit also explained the meaning behind the title Kartavya. According to him, the title represents performing one’s duty regardless of the situation. He added that the concept can apply to different responsibilities, including serving the nation or supporting a family.
The director also spoke about his earlier project Bhakshak and his experience working with Shah Rukh Khan’s production company. Pulkit admitted that he never expected Red Chillies to back the project. He described the collaboration as an unexpected but positive experience.
Discussing Kartavya, Pulkit revealed that the film faced delays because of internal changes at Red Chillies. However, he said he never lost confidence in the project. According to the director, he trusted the team to eventually release the film with proper respect and support.
Pulkit also shared his thoughts on the casting process and theatrical pressure. He explained that he finalises casting decisions only after carefully reading the script. The director further stated that theatrical releases often create heavy pressure on filmmakers, which is why he currently prefers OTT platforms.
Speaking about his earlier film Maalik, Pulkit expressed disappointment with the final version released to audiences. He suggested that creative pressure during theatrical releases influenced his decision. At the same time, he clarified that he has not completely ruled out returning to big-screen filmmaking in the future.
According to Pulkit, he would consider another theatrical project only when he feels fully confident about the process. His recent interview has created curiosity around Kartavya and its storytelling style. However, some viewers still remain cautious because of the mixed response received by several Indian Netflix originals in recent years.
Audiences are now waiting to see whether Kartavya can deliver a fresh experience when it premieres on Netflix. The film’s release will also test whether Pulkit’s OTT-focused approach connects strongly with viewers. Expectations remain moderate but curiosity around the project continues to grow online.
