Equal Pay for Entire Crew? Bollywood Bold Shake-Up

Aamir Khan talks about equal pay system

Aamir Khan has once again sparked discussion with his new take on profit sharing in films. Known for unconventional ideas, he believes that every person in a film’s journey deserves equal recognition and fair rewards for their contribution.

Back in 2013, during the release of Dhoom 3, he introduced his “success formula” to evaluate a film’s performance by comparing opening weekend numbers with its final box office collection. Using examples like 3 Idiots, he explained how stronger audience connect leads to higher multiples.

In a recent conversation with Komal Nahta, Aamir expanded the debate beyond collections. He stressed that filmmaking is a team effort, where technicians, actors, writers, directors, and crew all play equally important roles. By this logic, pay should be shared more fairly.

He suggested a “points system” where everyone begins at the same level, while writers and directors may receive slightly more for their crucial role in shaping the narrative. Beyond that, profit sharing should reflect who attracts audiences to theatres, which may differ by project.

Aamir also noted that he applies this principle in Aamir Khan Productions. After the success of Dangal, he ensured bonuses were distributed among his team, highlighting that true success comes from recognising the collective effort of everyone involved.
