An F-1 visa applicant has asked whether an applicant with a prior visa rejection has to wait 300 days before getting another interview slot. This question comes after the applicants friends who applied at the same time received slots, but they did not.
The applicant, applying at the Chennai VAC, reports that no slots are available. The 300-Day rumour is something that has spread recently across communities online.
However, it is entirely untrue.
There is no mandatory waiting period to reapplication after a 214(b) rejection. An applicant can reapply any time with a new DS-160 for and MRV fee.
Experts also corroborate this fact. The lack of slots is not due to any waiting period, but due to massive shortage of slots since October 2025.
Consulates often release F1 slots at midnight, which disappear within minutes.
However, it is a fact that reapplying soon without any significant changes in circumstances will lead to another rejection. The 214(b) rejection is used when the applicant has not demonstrated any strong ties to their home country.
Multiple rejections may even lead to an unofficial blacklist from the US. This is because multiple attempts may show a desperation to enter the country, and there for intentions of illegal immigration.
Embassies advise reapplying only when one can show significant change in circumstances. This includes new evidence tying to one’s home country, stronger financials, or clear study and return plans.
Applicants are advised to keep monitoring slots, prepare evidence of stronger ties, and avoid agents claiming guaranteed slots.
