A. R. Rahman’s contribution to Chhaava has been in the firing line constantly, and, honestly, undeservedly so. Complaints have poured in from viewers as well as critics, but let’s not forget that Rahman did not kill the film.
Chhaava is, in fact, performing very well on the box office, grossing more than $33 million—a testament to its wide reach.
Being an Oscar-winning composer, Rahman has always tried out new ideas. He did the same in Chhaava. He composed a score that was meant to complement the narrative of the film subtly and not overwhelm it.
While most would have expected a more flamboyant composition, his restrained style suited the story to perfection.
Moreover, the criticism comes at a time when Rahman is facing personal problems. His recent separation from his wife, Saira Banu, and her medical crisis have definitely affected him. To condemn his work during such a difficult period is both unfair and insensitive.
The only reason Chhaava, the historical drama on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, remains afloat is Vicky Kaushal’s superb performance and the collective work of the entire cast and crew. Rahman’s music gave emotional depth to the film.
Rahman-bashing must end. He remains a musical wizard who keeps re-inventing and inspiring. Let us instead bask in his artistry and understand the issues he is dealing with.
