Chhaava Faces Backlash

Following the massive success of Chhaava, a heated online debate has emerged where religious extremists think that the film is a Hindu vs. Muslim propaganda story.

While some argue that the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj has been oversimplified into a religious conflict, others believe that viewing it this way undermines the true greatness of the king.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s refusal to convert was a display of unwavering bravery but reducing his entire legacy to just that is a disservice to his greatness, say many.

His vision, courage, and leadership transcended religion and shouldn’t be reduced to religious conflict.

However, propaganda isn’t always obvious.

Every slow-motion fight scene where the king is shown defeating and overpowering Mughal soldiers can be seen as propaganda.

Presenting the battle from the Marathas’ perspective as a glorious triumph is also a form of narrative shaping.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was much more than just a warrior who fought against the Mughals.

He stood for Swarajya, freedom, and his people. He was a husband, a father, and a son.

However, Chhaava primarily focuses on his prowess as a warrior, neglecting the nuances of his relationships be it with his children, his mother, and his kingdom’s people.

While the film shouldn’t be boiled down to Hindu Vs Muslim propaganda, the makers also didn’t do a terrific job of making the film something more than that.
