The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) is facing a major challenge in Andhra Pradesh’s Local Body Elections. In Anantapur district, the party failed to get candidates in several wards. The situation appears even more striking in the erstwhile Kadapa district (home place to YS Jaganmohan Reddy) where YSRCP candidates reportedly did not file nominations in seven of the ten wards.
In Tadipatri municipality, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) secured five wards unopposed after no YSRCP candidates entered the fray. The five wards are 11, 14, 32, 33 and 45. While TDP candidates filed their nominations, the opposition failed to put forward even a single candidate in these wards.
The contrast is significant in Tadipatri, where YSRCP once claimed a strong political presence. The party’s inability to find candidates has raised questions about its local organisational strength. In Ward 37, however, TDP leader and Tadipatri MLA JC Prabhakar Reddy filed his nomination as a councillor candidate and faces a YSRCP rival.
The situation in Guntakal is equally challenging for YSRCP. Out of 32 wards, the party managed to find candidates in only eight. It failed to find candidates for the remaining 24 wards. Local political observers point to the ground-level strategy of the group led by MLA Jaya Ram as one factor behind the opposition’s weak showing.
YSRCP Draws a Blank in Seven Kadapa Local Bodies:
The developments in the erstwhile Kadapa district have added to YSRCP’s difficulties. The region has long been regarded as a political stronghold of the YS family. However, candidates reportedly did not file nominations on behalf of YSRCP in seven of the district’s ten urban local bodies.
The affected municipalities include Yerraguntla, Rajampet, Badvel, Mydukur, Jammalamadugu, Rayachoti and Kamalapuram. The absence of candidates in these areas has raised questions about the party’s ability to mobilise its cadre and retain its local leadership. Bandi Deepti is its Mayor candidate in Kadapa. YS Pramiladevi is contesting in Pulivendula, which has long been associated with the YS family. Narsimha Reddy has been named as the party’s municipal chairperson candidate in Proddatur. However, its limited presence across several other local bodies has become a major concern for the party.
Can YSRCP Revive Its Local Organisation?
The nomination figures point to a serious organisational challenge for YSRCP. A party that governed Andhra Pradesh for five years is now struggling to find candidates in several local body contests. The lack of candidates could weaken its ability to challenge the ruling alliance at the grassroots level.
YSRCP leaders have accused the coalition government of using its power to suppress the opposition. The party has also raised concerns about alleged pressure during the election process.
The immediate challenge for YSRCP is to explain to its supporters why it has failed to establish a presence in so many local contests. For YSRCP, rebuilding its cadre and restoring confidence among local leaders is a must if it hopes to remain competitive in Andhra Pradesh’s political landscape.
