Chatrapathi is set to re-release in a 4K version this year on the occasion of Prabhas‘ birthday. However, ticket prices in the US have sparked a controversy, with some moviegoers feeling that $13.50 is too expensive for a re-release.
US distributor Prathyangira Cinemas is bringing Chatrapathi 4K to theatres in the US. Responding to the backlash on X, the distributor explained why it could not offer lower ticket prices across all theatre chains.
According to Prathyangira, ticket prices at Cinemark and other theatre chains vary by location. Re-releases scheduled on Tuesdays usually cost around $5 to $7, but Prabhas’ birthday falls on a Friday this year, making a Tuesday release impossible.
The distributor stated that it cannot price tickets below the standard rates set by Cinemark and other theatre chains. However, Regal allows re-release tickets to be priced at around $7.99, and Prathyangira has already implemented this pricing for all its re-releases at Regal. The distributor also confirmed that the Unlimited option is enabled.
Prathyangira said this was the maximum it could do under the existing pricing arrangements and hoped the explanation would address the concerns.
While the distributor has clarified its position, the controversy highlights the pricing challenge surrounding theatrical re-releases in the US. Fans may be excited to watch Prabhas’ Chatrapathi in theatres again, but many feel that $13.50 is too expensive for a re-release.
