Aamir Khan has taken a great risk with Sitaare Zameen Par by not giving it’s OTT rights before its release. He aimed to garner as much footfall at the theatres as possible and so decided not to make it available on OTT so soon, so that the fans are compelled to watch it at the big screens.
Many trade analysts felt that Aamir is setting a great example by his move. The general perception of audiences these days is that the movie will ultimately release on OTT so what’s the point of going to theatres and this is killing the spirit of films.
However, some experts were also quick to point out that Aamir is a producer of a secure financial status and he can take this risk but not everyone can follow his league. These days the quality of movies in Bollywood has become so tragic that the filmmakers and distributors have become a bit immoral and lost faith in the theatre going culture.
Considering that SZP only did a decent business and even the critical reviews were not exceptional, many fans are wondering if Aamir played a gamble with the wrong project. Some commented that if he couldn’t pull audiences to the theatres why is he so arrogant and not taking help of OTT to even it out.
As per reports, Aamir is planning to distribute the film on YouTube with a one time pay and watch basis. It would be interesting to see if this trend of not selling film to OTT well in advance helps the box office to revive its business.
