Actress Nushrratt Bharuccha recently triggered a religious controversy after visiting the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. She reportedly went for darshan and took part in rituals at the revered Jyotirlinga temple.
This marked her second visit to the temple, where she joined devotees for the morning Bhasma Aarti. She offered water to Lord Mahakal, applied tilak on her forehead, and wore a traditional patka as part of the prayer process.
Nushrratt later shared a video on social media expressing gratitude for the visit. She also praised the temple management for handling the large New Year crowd and ensuring smooth arrangements for devotees.
Although the visit was meant to seek blessings ahead of the New Year, it drew sharp reactions. Several religious voices on social media criticised the actress for participating in Hindu rituals.
The strongest response came from Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, National President of All India Muslim Jamaat. He issued a fatwa calling her temple visit a grave sin and said it violated Islamic principles.
He demanded that the actress repent by offering prayers for forgiveness and reaffirm her faith through the Kalma. His remarks further intensified the debate across social media platforms.
The issue quickly went viral online, drawing mixed reactions from users. Many criticised the Maulana for issuing fatwas, while others questioned the selective nature of such statements.
Fans of the actress defended her actions and said she has the constitutional right to follow or engage with any religion. They argued that personal faith should not be policed publicly.
Many viewers pointed out that the larger concern was how a simple act of devotion was turned into a divisive issue. They said such incidents only deepen religious polarisation.
Nushrratt Bharuccha has not publicly responded to the accusations so far. However, the discussion has already escalated into a wider religious conflict on social media.
