Priyadarshan had a record of directing remakes for the majority of his career. He even takes inspiration from Hollywood films, adding certain scenes from some popular titles to his movies. Despite all of that, Priyadarshan has had a good track record over the years.
Meanwhile, a new interview with him has brought focus to his career as a director. Notably, Priyadarshan opened up about not doing sequels, saying that he believes that the second part should always be better than the first.
Priyadarshan even recalled Akshay Kumar once asking him if he would like to direct Bhagam Bhag 2. However, Priyadarshan refused to do the same, adding that even a third part of Hera Pheri will not happen.
Priyadarshan stated in the conversation that when a film is appreciated by the audience, there is no need to spoil the entire experience by doing a follow-up. He said that this is why he does not direct sequels and that he is okay with other people directing the sequels of his films.
Notably, netizens reacted to the interview, with a lot of people questioning whether Priyadarshan has forgotten something about his career. Most of them pointed out the reasons for the director not doing sequels, saying that he has already done a follow-up, Hungama 2, which was released directly on OTT in 2021.
A particular section criticized his statement at the same time, saying that he is ready to remake his films and deliver disasters, but he is not ready to do a sequel with a fresh script. A few others even stated that Priyadarshan should never direct a sequel, since everyone has witnessed the disaster that he created with Hungama 2.
On the other hand, some encouraged Priyadarshan to do sequels. They said that since he directed the first part, only he can make the sequel much better, and he should now focus on bringing the follow-ups to some of the cult classics that he made in Hindi. They also requested Priyadarshan to either accept the offer of Bhagam Bhag 2 or Hera Pheri 3.
Some other people shared a different reaction. They said that Priyadarshan was right in terms of the reasons that he gave. They wrote that the habit of sequels should be abandoned since a lot of unnecessary follow-ups have been made without offering anything fresh to the audience.
Social media users have clearly shared a mixed response to Priyadarshan’s interview. But only time will tell if the director will decide to take the path that many production houses have already started following over the last few years.
