Rashmika, Nora, Malaika Oversexualized: Right Move?

Rashmika Mandanna in Thamma trailer still

Maddock Films’ upcoming movie Thamma is facing backlash for oversexualization. The film, starring Rashmika Mandanna and Ayushmann Khurrana, is part of Maddock’s expanding horror-comedy universe, which includes eight new projects lined up till 2028.

When the trailer dropped, fans were eager to see another fun and spooky entertainer from Maddock Films. But that excitement quickly faded. Many viewers called the trailer weak and said it lacked the quality they expect from this popular franchise.

The biggest controversy arose from the excessive sexualization of women in the film’s promotional content. Rashmika Mandanna appeared in several revealing outfits, and multiple item songs featured her and other women in over-glamorized, hyper-sexualized sequences.

Initially, fans didn’t mind Rashmika’s glamorous look. But after seeing three back-to-back item songs, they accused the makers of normalizing over-sexualization in a franchise once known for being family-friendly. Many questioned whether this was what Maddock Films now considers acceptable family entertainment.

What worries fans more is that upcoming projects like Chamunda, Shakti Shalini, and Stree 3 also sound women-centric. If Thamma is any indication, viewers fear these films might follow the same problematic path.

Maddock’s horror-comedy universe earned love for blending Indian folklore with witty, family-safe storytelling. Item songs were once just side attractions never the focus. But Thamma appears to have replaced story-driven humor with flashy gimmicks that undermine the essence of the universe.

Ironically, this entire franchise began with Stree, a film celebrated for empowering women. With Thamma, fans feel Maddock has lost touch with that message, choosing cheap thrills over meaningful content.

Audiences are now hoping the studio will refocus on what made it special strong storytelling, cultural roots, and characters that stay with you long after the credits roll.
