Christian Bale’s portrayal of Patrick Bateman has gone down as one of the finest performances by an actor in the 21st century and rightly so, given the lengths he went to portray the rawness of the banker-killer.
American Psycho did not do any upheaval at the box office given its nature and the R-rating. But, over the years, it has become a fan favourite and has a massive following. A big portion of memes owe credit to Bale for his performance.
Now, more than two decades later, rumours have emerged that Lionsgate is planning to commission a modern day remake of the movie. Based on the 1991 novel of same name by Bret Easton Ellis, both the movie and novel received recognition for their excruciating graphic detailing of the act of killing and what goes behind it.
As soon as the news hit the internet fans started sharing their opinions, most of them against the idea of a remake. Bale had done an impeccable job and doing a remake just to cash in on nostalgia may end up the same way many of the remakes and adaptations have ended lately.
Whether the rumors are true or not, we will have to wait for official confirmation. But, given the fans’ reaction, the movie should be better left untouched.
