A new controversy seems to be in the works in Hollywood.
Barbie was one of the best movies to come out last year, not only commercially but critically too. It was obvious that WB would promote it for the Oscars which it did. But, what has raised eyebrows from everyone is that Oscar is putting Barbie’s screenplay in the “Best Adapted Screenplay’ even when WB is campaigning it for “Original Screenplay”.
The obvious question that any sane person would ask is “Adapted from where?” Barbie and Ken are toys, they had no story whatsoever, and still Academy has pushed it in the adapted screenplay.
It is not the first time that movies based on pre-existing characters are classified as an adapted screenplay- “Toy Story 3”, “Borat 2”, “Before Sunset” and “Before Midnight” were nominated in the same categories, only because movies based on the characters existed.
The Academy may have its own set of rules to classify screenplays, but this is an open rejection of the art that the writers displayed to craft a screenplay out of toys!
