Taylor Swift’s new album is dividing her sea of fans, and yet she showers in the waves of fame. “The Tortured Poets Department” was making headlines before its release. The leaks created a major collision. Some were saying that if you listened to the leaked versions of the album and shared them with others, then you weren’t a true Swiftie; others who were just too eager about the album couldn’t contain their excitement and started sharing it.
Let’s talk about the content, which, for all practical reasons, is subpar. The lyrics just do not feel like Taylor’s. It appears as if she is trying to impersonate a certain coquette singer. Taylor is known for her soft spring vibe music; although her evolution would definitely be welcome, her doing something that is essentially not her genre is jarring to even some of her fans. Full of distasteful allusions ranging from Rolling Stone to Jesus’ crucifixion to Grand Theft Auto, the album is just a poor attempt at making something out of something else. The feature by Post Malone is also there. Perhaps the only good part of the song.
Yet again, Taylor is back, slandering men all around. This time, it is a straight-forward attack on Matty Healy. Ironically, Taylor’s album not having any toxicity towards her last ex, Joe Alwyn, has led to disappointment among the fans. One can expect an upsurge in memes about the same. Taylor’s album does its job, which is to get her cash. The album is doing great on social media and Spotify. The sales are booming, and the double album is a happy incident for the “Swifties”. For the rest, it is no less than a celebration of mediocrity.
