Samantha’s Yashoda is her first mainstream Telugu release in a while. The film had a pretty decent opening weekend at the box office both domestically and also in the USA.
But the film has failed the all-important Monday test. It registered a big drop in collections on working days. After a big dip on Monday, the negative trend continued on Tuesday.
In view of the tragic passing of Krishna, cinema halls in several districts across Andhra Pradesh shut operations. This didn’t help the cause of Yashoda which is already struggling at the box office on working days.
Yashoda is still fair off the breakeven mark and it had to have at least a decent run on working days, but that didn’t happen. The only positive for the film now is that there are no notable Telugu films releasing this weekend, so it might continue to be one of the better choices for the Telugu audience.
The film will now need to have a magical second weekend if it is to go at least somewhere near the breakeven target. But will it have the required magical weekend?
On the other hand, the film has just breached the half-million mark in the USA which is a positive sign. It is the only area to have reached the breakeven mark. It is evident that Sam’s market in USA is intact.
