The above statement, I mean the title of this story seems to be very confusing, isn’t it? No cine buff would actually believe that Naga Chaitanya is an illiterate. But technically he is an illiterate. Let’s see how. Chai spent his early years in Chennai. So he can speak Tamil but can’t read or write it. He can speak Telugu because it is his mother tongue. But he can’t read or write Telugu because he didn’t have Telugu subject in school.
Coming to Hindi, he can’t speak Hindi again because he spent his early days in Chennai where Hindi speaking was condemned due to extreme regionalism. But surprisingly he can read and write Hindi. How? Sanskrit being his second language in school days and since Sanskrit is not a script language, Hindi script is used o write Sanskrit. That’s how he can read and write Hindi but can’t understand a bit.
Coming to English, he can read, write and comprehend it. That implies Naga Chaitanya is an illiterate in Tamil & Telugu, literate in Hindi but can’t understand. Chai’s literacy seems to be very confusing and he says conditions apply. All this is revealed in the popular TV show ‘Konchem Touch Lo Vunte Chepta’ hosted by Pradeep.
