The first look of Jr NTR and Trivikram Srinivas’ much-awaited mythological film, tentatively titled God of War, has landed in controversy, with a section of Tamil audiences objecting to a promotional line shared by producer Naga Vamsi on social media.
The caption read: “Born in the North. Forged in the Heartland. Worshipped in the South. Now… A story meant to belong to the universe.”
The words “Born in the North” immediately triggered backlash from many Tamil netizens.
For many Tamils, Lord Murugan is not just a Hindu deity. He is Tamil Kadavul (God of the Tamils) and holds a very special place in Tamil culture and history. Many people accused the makers of trying to change or oversimplify Lord Murugan’s identity for cinematic purposes. Some even warned the team not to rewrite history for the sake of a movie.
Whether those claims are historically correct or not is a different discussion. But one thing is clear. The caption has hurt the sentiments of a section of the Tamil audience.
Now, another question is being discussed in trade circles.
Will this controversy affect Suriya’s upcoming bilingual film, Vishwanath & Sons?
The film is produced by Naga Vamsi and is scheduled to release on August 14. Since it is being made as a Telugu-Tamil bilingual on a big budget, the Tamil Nadu market is crucial to its box office recovery.
The controversy has surfaced just a few weeks before the promotions of Vishwanath & Sons are expected to begin. If the issue continues to trend on social media, it could create unnecessary negative buzz around the production house.
This is not a regular movie controversy. Lord Murugan is deeply connected to Tamil culture, and many people take such issues very seriously.
During the promotions, Naga Vamsi will almost certainly be asked about the controversy by the media. How he responds could make a big difference. If he offers a calm and respectful clarification, the issue may gradually cool down, and public perception could improve.
However, if the controversy continues to grow or is not handled properly, it could create unnecessary hurdles for Vishwanath & Sons in Tamil Nadu.
