Idupu Kayitham has generated plenty of discussion around its Telangana connection since its title announcement. With even film-related conversations turning into Telangana versus Andhra debates, comments at promotional events need a little more care.
At this juncture, producer Bunny Vas made remarks that many Telangana viewers found offensive. He casually said he had never expected to see so much greenery and so many paddy fields in Telangana until he visited a remote village to shoot Idupu Kayitham.
The comment drew harsh criticism on social media, with people questioning his assumptions about the region. What he may have intended as an expression of surprise came across as an uninformed generalisation about Telangana.
Lead actor Priyadarshi’s comments at the same event also backfired. Referring to a scene from the promo, he spoke about serving liquor at wedding feasts and other gatherings as though it were a common practice across Telangana.
People on social media questioned why he appeared to speak on behalf of the entire region and normalise something that does not represent every household or community. Presenting it so casually only added to the backlash.
Surprisingly, both remarks came from the same promotional event. For a film already drawing attention for its Telangana connection, these comments have brought an avoidable controversy.
