IMAX is becoming super popular, especially in India. Before, only Hollywood movies showed up in IMAX, but now, even Indian films are joining the party.
In 2023, a whopping 44 movies hit IMAX screens across India, making a cool $21.30 million (about Rs. 176.51 crores) from just 27 screens.
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” ruled the IMAX game, raking in $6.135 million (about Rs. 50.84 crores). “Avatar: The Way Of Water” came in second, earning $1.821 million (about Rs. 15.09 crores).
Among Indian films, Shah Rukh Khan’s “Jawan” led the way with $1.665 million (about Rs. 13.80 crores), while SRK again took the fourth spot with Pathaan which collected $1.549 million (about Rs. 12.83 crores).
Even with a short run, Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning – Part One” snagged $1.236 million (about Rs. 10.24 crores) in IMAX. Ranbir Kapoor’s “Animal,” pulled in $1 million (about Rs. 8.28 crores).
In 2024, Dhanush’s Pongal release Captain Miller is gaining better appreciation in the IMAX version than in normal versions due to its scale. The next big film to release on IMAX screens is Fighter starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone.
Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD releasing on May 9th is expected to be another big IMAX release in India. Salaar was also an IMAX release but couldn’t create much of a mark on those screens.
But Kalki is a different beast altogether made on an international scale and standards. The film, if made well, will deserve an IMAX viewing and it might turn out to be the biggest HIT in the IMAX version from India this year if things fall into place.
